Work is starting to ramp up on what will be one of the tallest buildings in Vietnam, the 363 metre tall Vietinbank Tower, to stand in Hanoi.

The Foster + Partners designed project actually features two buildings, the taller of which is the banking headquarters with 68 floors, whilst the second shorter tower is connected to it by a retail podium and runs to a height of 250 metres and 48 floors. This will have a luxury hotel and serviced apartments within.

The design includes several bioclimatic features to try and deal with the stifling tropical environment that Vietnam can experience. A facility with desiccant material is intended to try and strip the humidity out of the air which is then filtered to the bottom of the building with cool water to reduce its temperature so it can be circulated providing something more energy friendly than air conditioning. Although this technology isn't new no-one has ever attempted to use it on a skyscraper before.

The sides of the building feature windows that are given solar shading by a serrated fašade planned on a 4.5 metre grid. Breaking up the sides of the building will be several sky gardens. The crown of the building is a natural culmination of the triangular floor-plates seen throughout by ending in an angled V that helps project the corporate branding when seen from above in a similar manner to the Natwest Tower in London. The V motif is not repeated on the hotel building where instead there is a simple triangle.

With such a prestigious national financial institution on board for Vietnam, one would expect the scheme to be built in the current central business district of Hanoi. Instead it is planned several miles away from the city core in what is effectively a suburban area, albeit one that is set for massive development much like La Defense or Canary Wharf. Incredibly there are still paddy fields only a few yards away.

The $400 million project is set for completion in 2014.
